Holiday Hold: Why Your Texting Assistant Needs a Calendar
February 25, 2026
Imagine getting an assisted follow-up text on Christmas morning. "Hi! Just checking in about your home search..." Nobody wants to be that agent.
The Holiday Problem
Most texting assistant runs on a simple schedule: if it's a weekday and within your send window, texts go out. But automation doesn't know it's Thanksgiving. It doesn't know about Memorial Day, the 4th of July, or Christmas Eve.
Without a holiday calendar, your automation will dutifully send texts on days when:
- Leads are with family and annoyed by business texts
- Response rates are near zero
- The text feels tone-deaf and automated (the opposite of what you want)
What Smart Agents Do
Agents who use texting assistant effectively build in holiday holds — predetermined days when automation pauses completely. No texts go out, and the queue resumes automatically the next business day.
At minimum, most agents hold on:
- New Year's Day
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day
- Presidents' Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Columbus Day
- Veterans Day
- Thanksgiving (and often the day after)
- Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
- New Year's Eve
Custom Dates Matter Too
Beyond federal holidays, consider your local market. If your area has a major local event or school holiday that effectively shuts down business activity, add it to your hold calendar. Some agents also hold during natural disasters, major weather events, or community tragedies when business-as-usual texting would feel inappropriate.
The Automation Should Handle This
If your texting tool requires you to manually pause and resume automation around every holiday, you'll inevitably forget one. Forgetting means assisted texts going out on Thanksgiving while you're eating turkey — and leads judging you for it.
Look for tools that let you configure a holiday calendar once and forget it. The automation should check the calendar every morning and skip the day entirely if there's a hold. No manual intervention needed.
It's a Small Detail That Says a Lot
Holiday hold is one of those features that doesn't make the highlight reel but quietly protects your reputation. The text that doesn't go out on Christmas is worth more than the one that does on a Tuesday. Automation should be smart enough to know the difference.
